Retirement living is by definition about leisure, recreation, and a sense of luxury that comes from having the time to enjoy the fruits of a long life. The View, our senior living community in Stone Mountain, Georgia, creates instant community for the active senior, packing in experiences and amenities wrapped in finely crafted details.
This property also delivers an unexpected twist: The majority of its 80 units are subsidized by the Housing Authority of DeKalb County, making this affordable housing that’s anything but ordinary. Our challenge: turn a place that could have easily felt institutional or isolating into a warm, welcoming showcase of a home.
We gave both the big picture and human-scale details of this property lots of attention, planning a campus complete with walking paths, a gazebo, a community room with views of Stone Mountain, and a sweeping entry that feels more luxury hotel than senior living facility. For residents, units offer tree-lined views, and a corner porch that allows everyone to enjoy the warm southern nights alfresco. In general, we fine-tuned the property to encourage movement and collaboration – key elements of wellness as we age. An in-house movie theater, den-like business center, wellness facility and culinary garden get residents moving, foster chance meetings, and are the most-loved amenities among The View’s residents.
The View presented an opportunity to build more than just a typical parcel of subsidized housing. Instead, we focused on creating a happy, healthy community. When you put heart and soul in the process, you will find heart and soul engrained throughout the property. Residents and staff here are among the proudest, most welcoming we’ve met in our work, and the community has been an unanticipated hit, with units filling up in record time.
